September: Embracing a New Season — A Note from Jim Ritchie

September 14, 2026

There is something about September that feels like a fresh start.

The pace of summer begins to slow, the days gradually change, and we start settling into a new rhythm. For me, September is a good reminder to pause for a moment—not just to think about where the year has taken us so far, but also to appreciate where we are right now and look ahead to what is still to come.

Making Time for What Matters

A change in season is a natural opportunity to take stock.

What has gone well this year? What experiences have brought you the most joy? Are there people you would like to spend more time with? Maybe there is a hobby you've been meaning to return to or simply a little more time you'd like to carve out for yourself.

Those questions don't necessarily require big changes. Sometimes the most meaningful adjustments are small ones.

Fall offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the things that can get pushed aside during a busy summer. Take a walk and enjoy the changing scenery. Visit a local farmers market. Pick up a book you've been meaning to read. Make plans with family or friends you haven't seen recently. Or revisit an activity that you enjoyed years ago.

The important thing is making room for the things that bring enjoyment, connection, and purpose to everyday life.

September is also National Self-Improvement Month, which seems particularly appropriate as we enter a new season. Growth doesn't always mean taking on another goal or adding something else to an already busy schedule. Sometimes, growth simply means becoming more intentional about how we spend our time and what we value.

Looking Back on a Wonderful Summer Social

One of the highlights of the summer for us was our 2026 Summer Social.

It was a wonderful evening and a great opportunity to step away from the office, enjoy some beautiful summer weather, and spend time with so many of the people who make our practice special.

Events like this are about much more than getting together outside the office. They give us an opportunity to connect with clients and friends on a more personal level, catch up with familiar faces, and simply enjoy one another's company.

Lisa and I, along with the entire team, are grateful to everyone who came out and helped make the evening such a success.

Thank you for being part of it.

Next Stop: Italy

As much as I enjoyed the summer, I'm also looking forward to what's next.

The suitcases are coming out of the closet, and preparations are officially underway for a trip Lisa and I have been looking forward to. Later this month, we'll be setting sail on a cruise along the Italian coast.

I'm looking forward to all of it—the scenery, the history, the opportunity to explore new places, and, of course, sampling as much authentic pasta and gelato as possible.

There is something special about traveling with someone you've shared so much of life with. Trips like this provide an opportunity to step away from the normal routine, experience something new, and make memories together.

I'll be out of the office from September 10 through September 28 while we're traveling. During that time, Holly will be available to assist with anything you may need. Because I will be traveling outside the country, I am not permitted to conduct business while away, but the office will continue to be available to you.

Cybersecurity: Are Your Passwords Strong Enough?

As we spend more and more of our lives online, protecting our personal information has become increasingly important.

Passwords remain one of the primary ways we protect our online accounts, but creating and maintaining strong passwords can be challenging. With so many accounts requiring different passwords and increasingly complex requirements, it's easy to fall into habits that actually make us less secure.

One of the biggest problems is password overload.

When people have too many passwords to remember, they may start using the same password across multiple accounts or choosing passwords that are simple and easy to remember. Unfortunately, those are also much easier for cybercriminals to compromise.

Here are three practical ways to strengthen your online security:

1. Turn on Two-Factor Authentication

Whenever an account offers two-factor authentication, consider enabling it.

Two-factor authentication adds another layer of protection by requiring something beyond your password—such as a one-time verification code, security question, or biometric authentication.

Even if someone obtains your password, that additional step can make it significantly more difficult for them to access your account.

2. Consider Passphrases Instead of Traditional Passwords

Rather than relying on a single word or a short combination of characters, consider using a passphrase made up of several words, numbers, and symbols.

Passphrases can be easier to remember while still providing a stronger barrier against unauthorized access. The key is to use something unique for each account rather than recycling the same phrase everywhere.

3. Use a Password Manager

If keeping track of dozens of unique passwords feels impossible, a password manager can help.

Think of it as a secure vault for your passwords. Instead of trying to remember every individual login, you maintain one strong master password while the password manager handles the rest.

There are several reputable password-management services available, including Bitwarden, Dashlane, and 1Password. Take some time to research the options and determine which one best fits your needs.

Good cybersecurity habits are another important part of protecting what you've worked hard to build. Taking a few simple steps today can significantly reduce your online risk.

A New Season, A Fresh Perspective

As we move from summer into fall, I hope September gives you an opportunity to slow down and appreciate the season.

Take time to enjoy the people around you. Make a few new memories. Reconnect with something you've been missing. And perhaps take a moment to consider what you want the months ahead to look like.

For me, September will bring a little bit of reflection, a little bit of travel, and hopefully plenty of time to enjoy both.

Thank you, as always, for allowing me to be part of your financial journey. If you have questions, would like to discuss an idea, or simply want to touch base, our team is always here to help.

Wishing you a wonderful start to fall and a very happy September!
